  2. I had the honour of meeting Commissiona in the 1990s - a charming man and a fine conductor. We spoke about the importance of performing Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony without the cuts, and I will never forget his rationale: "When you do these monsters, you should not apologise for them."

Thank you for sharing this recording.

  3. I find this version so pure and rewarding that I have begun to wonder
when it was recorded. How close to the 1928 première was this
satisfying version? The picture that accompanies it-- was that
Coco Chanel's costuming in 1928 for the USA or Paris a few months later?

  4. What is the date when tis miraculous record was recorded?
Is the dancers-picture a representation of the USA première
where Voco Chanel costumes were worn?
Do we have any idea what those costumes looked like?
A Concert Hall Lp would date from 1950-54, would it not?

  5. Philip and Johnd, thanks for your reactions!
The photo is from ca.1928, so I don't think it's the Coco Chanel costumes for that was 1929, but I'm not sure. (see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ballets_Russes_-_Apollo_musag%C3%A8te.jpg).
I think the recording date will be between 1960-1967, for in that period he was directing the Ramat Gan orchestra, and it's a stereo record. Alas the record cannot be found in the amazing CHARM database.

  8. Thanks for uploading this -- it might well be the best 'Apollon' I've heard (not that I've done a thorough comparison, but I've heard a few recordings). Also gives me peculiar pride as an Israeli to hear such fine playing from this orchestra and conductor.
